San Quentin xWays is a one-of-a-kind game, and it once again proves that Nolimit City isn’t afraid to step into new territory. The slot is set in the maximum-security prison where players are locked up with a bunch of tough criminals.
The theme and some images initially stirred a bit of controversy, but eventually the slot was recognized as a fantastic product. Released in 2021, it was one of the most popular slots of that year. San Quentin was 37th in our rating of the Best New Slots of 2021.
It isn’t only the theme that stands out. San Quentin offers some crazy figures such as 150,000x max win and a 2,000x bonus buy option. Volatility level is Insane, but the hit frequency is pretty nice, 34.25%.
Features
There are several features that spice up both main and bonus games. The first thing that will probably catch your attention are tiny prison cells with inmates in them. These areas are an important part of the game. When they are unlocked, they award either a high value or a feature symbols:
- Wilds. It’s a classic type of wild with no special powers.
- Razor Splits do just what you would expect them to do. They divide symbols into two. And two of them on the same reel will divide symbols twice.
- xWays. This is another feature that increases the number of win ways, and it adds even more ways than a splitting can create. A single xWays squishes other symbols on a reel and reveals 4 similar symbols. Two of them on a single reel award 8 similar symbols.
Unlike the above features, Split Wilds are free to appear on the main layout. Their splitting power doesn’t go beyond a single reel.
Bonus Games
The best chance of hitting a big win is in the bonus game, and there are three levels of it. The first one requires 3 special symbols second and third require 4 and 5 of them. The difference between them is the number of Jumping Wilds, which persist through the round and move after every spin.
Where special symbols land also matters, because the reels on which they appeared will enhancers unlocked for the entire duration of the round. Speaking of the duration – you don’t get a fixed number of spins as it’s randomly decided before the bonus starts.
You’ll also get a random multiplier for the Jumping Wilds. These multipliers can grow up to x512, but it’s quite a long way to that top number because the value doesn’t increase super-fast. One Razor can only double the figure.
Bonus Buy
This is where things get a bit crazy. To enter the free spins, you get three bonus buy options. Two of them are priced within the industry standards. 100x for 3 bonus symbols and 400x for 4 of them. But to get 5, players have to pay a whopping 2,000x price. Because the volatility is insane you can end up paying a lot of money for a small reward, but if things go your way, the max win is the limit and in this slot it’s just massive.
