Bet365 is to pay DKK4.7m, which is equivalent to around €631,000 for violating athletes’ image rights. 23 Danish sports stars sued the popular gambling operator for using their images and names for marketing without their permission for two years between 2019 and 2021.
Despite the operator’s claim that the images and names were used for editorial content, the Danish court sided with the athletes. Bet365 is ordered to compensate for the violations, and the amount athletes will receive is proportionate to the number of times their rights were infringed.
Christian Eriksen, who plays for Manchester United football club, will get the largest compensation of DKK1.5 (slightly over €200,000). Others will get smaller compensations, and the operator is also to cover legal costs of a variety of Danish sports associations.
